Joan H. Stokes

February 20, 1936 — July 4, 2024

Joan Hosendove Stokes, age 88, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 4, 2024 at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River.

Born in Evansville, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Olivia Maxine (House) Hosendove.

Joan graduated from Indiana State University, earning a Bachelor's Degree.

Throughout her life, Joan worked as a researcher for the New York Public Library in Manhattan, dedicating nearly three decades of service before retiring.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Joan was a devoted member of Liberty Baptist Church in Evansville. She lovingly served as an usher and shared her wisdom by teaching Sunday school.

Described as loving, optimistic, very educated, well-spoken, and supportive by those who knew her best, Joan touched the hearts of many with her genuine kindness and grace.

In her leisure time, Joan found joy in activities such as reading, tending to her beloved plants with a green thumb that seemed touched by magic. She enjoyed indulging in her favorite soap operas like "Days of Our Lives" and "The Young and The Restless," finding comfort in their familiar storylines. Joan often played friendly games of Scrabble and Spades with loved ones and was quite competitive. A lover of sweets, she could often be found enjoying coffee and her Schweppes Ginger Ale.

Joan is survived by her daughter, Yvette Taylor; her loving grandchildren, Kevin Fernandez of Fall River, Donna Baldwin of River Rouge, MI and Elexiea Stokes of Redford Township, MI; numerous great grandchildren, Fran Howard, Kaiya Fernandez, Frank Fernandez, Di'anna Stokes, Joshua Bryant, Alivia Harris, Kashya Baldwin, Xaire Baldwin, Miasha Yibir, Lexus Stokes, De'Ja Stokes, and Kenneth Brown; and two great great grandchildren, De'Vonna Thorn and Amara Bryant. She was the great grandmother of Ariel Stokes.

To honor her family's wishes, her funeral services will be private and visiting hours will be respectfully omitted.
